Want To Eat A Little Healthier?

Let’s face it, we are all trying to eat healthier on a budget and possibly lose weight too. But no one wants to give up recipes that contain frying oil. It just does not taste the same unless it is deep fried, and the food doesn’t come out the same if it’s not deep fried, right?

Don’t worry, you no longer have to give up using frying oil. Have you ever heard of using palm oil? It is produced in warmer climates, such as Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is made from the fruit of the palm tree. The fruit is taken from the tree and boiled. Afterward, it is taken to a mortar made of wood, cut and smashed, then returned to boiling water with a lid. As it cooks, the oil rises to the top and is gathered to be bottled and sold.

Now that you know where it comes from, and how is it made. What can it be used for, and what are its benefits? It is rich in Vitamin E, which we all know for its anti-aging remedies. It is also loaded with carotenoids, an antioxidant that helps the immune system fight off cancer and heart disease. Who thought frying oil could give you energy? This one does.

All that is left is some good recipes to use it in. Want a quick delicious meal? Try this one. Spaghetti Aglio Olio e Peperoncino. This is enough for four people. Boil one pound of spaghetti till al dente. While that is being cooked, start the sauce. Cut 6 cloves of garlic thinly, then saute in 1/4 cup of palm, and 1/4 cup of olive oils. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes. When the noodles are done, drain it, but keep 1/4 cup of the pasta water. Add all together, return to the burner and cook until pasta is covered. Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped parsley on top, and serve.

How about a delicious snack? Make some sweet potato fries for everyone to gather around and share. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grab 5 sweet potatoes, peel and cut into 1/4 inch slices. Put potatoes in a large bowl and toss with just enough oil to coat. Spread them on parchment paper in a sheet tray. Add salt and pepper, and pop it in the oven. Turn them occasionally for about 20 minutes or until browned. Let it cool, then serve.

There are many recipes to try out and enjoy, you just need to do a search on the internet. One thing to remember to look for when purchasing the oil is the label. The label should have the CSPO letters on it, which stand for Certified Sustainable Palm Oil. This means that the producers care about our planet, are not overproducing, cutting down trees, and has a zero-burn policy, which helps to save the rain forests.

So while trying to eat healthier and on a budget, you can still enjoy wonderful meals and flavourful dishes. Enjoy!
